Awhile back I mentioned being interested in the LPI exams. Well the LPIC-1 Study Guide by Roderick W. Smith is on its way. And seeing that the training help will be available online aswell, makes the whole idea of studying again so much better.

This morning i spent some time online getting updated, yet not up to date with the news :) I read the article “Put Africa In The Linux Timeline” which i enjoyed and completely agree with. Somewhere out there, there is skills, people with the skills. A lot of things (projects) get done. Perhaps not known widely enough, for the rest of the world to take notice.
Take a look at the ” Linux/Open Source Timeline Africa “

Today again I installed ubuntu, but this time on an fairly old Acer P III or is it PII, anyway 450 Mhz with 320mb ram. And the best or is it worst, two SCSI drivers. At first the install didn’t even start, then the server reboots. Later I got the SCSI Utility, formatted both drives then attempted the install again. This time round it went through. Been such a long time since i’ve touched ubuntu. Could even what the package manager was called
(aptitude). And the sshd doesn’t work. Surely the server install, did install it. I’ll have to take a closer look later.

i finally got the rrdtool installed on fedora core 2. Took me a long way through and around, but I again learned some new stuff. Will add a detailed page later for reference
might need to do it again.
And to get info, well that is another story. I f managed to get a hold of sum perl script to collect data, then enters it into to rrd files. Then the problem comes to get a cgi page working, to make and display the graphs. Currently I only have Network info for three interfaces showing. But I need to get cpu, mem, squid info also. I guess that will take a certain amount of time/skill to get up and running.

Got an article on Howtoforge.com for throttling bandwidth with mod_cband.
I am pretty sure it is (I am) going to break something trying to get this working

and did i struggle with this…
only later did i realise that the cach was clean, it was my browser’s cache that isn’t cleared…
but here is a good way that worked for me to clear the cache and open up some disk space, for the time being.
I use
/etc/init.d/squid stop
cd /var/spool/squid (or where-ever you cache dir is)
mkdir JUNK
mv ?? swap.state* junk
/usr/sbin/squid -z
/etc/init.d/squid start
cd /var/spool/squid
rm -rf JUNK &
and that worked for me !

well i ran into sum problems getting fedora installed. it just kept hanging
but after searching on the net this morning, got to this thread on the fedora forum, that helped me getting it installed. don’t know if I am going to get it working, but the installation is running at the moment on disk #2.
—Update—
i got it running, except the intel 865 chipset is giving me headaches, to get the xserver correct. works very well on 800*600 but not 1024*768 distorts kindoff… but when i move the menu bars at the top and at the bottom, then it looks fine, just don’t want to that all the time…
